Project description

The project carried out by Donaghy + Dimond Architects has given the Inchicore National School (Dublin), built in the 19th century, a renovated structure enveloped in curtain walls and sweet chestnut cladding, thus integrating the school with the surrounding environment.

The building pioneered the use of sweet chestnut from sustainable European forests. This design has been recognised by the Royal Institute of Architects of Ireland (RIAI) with the Best Educational Building award in 2015, as well as by the Architectural Association of Ireland (AAI) in 2016 with the Downes Medal award. In 2017 it was among the top 40 entries for the EU Prize for Contemporary Architecture (Mies Award).
