Architectural transformation with chestnut wood: innovation and heritage

The refurbishment of the old town hall of A Fonsagrada, built in 1845 and in disuse since 2015, represents a balance between heritage conservation and architectural innovation. The Galician studio Firm Arquitectura, led by Daniel Gómez Magide and Adrián López Rancaño, has converted this building into a museum to house the collection donated by the family of the cartoonist Antonio Fraguas, ‘Forges’. The intervention has prioritised structural consolidation using local materials, such as chestnut wood in its noblest expression and respectful of the environment, as it is a local product.

Curtain wall made of chestnut glulam: precision and high performance

The structural solution adopted in the refurbishment is based on the use of chestnut wood laminated beams, an exclusive Siero Lam product. This product is guaranteed by the CE marking, guaranteeing an optimum combination of mechanical resistance and aesthetic excellence. Its capacity to support large spans without intermediate supports allows for slimmer and more efficient architectural designs, optimising the construction elements without compromising structural stability.

In the building’s central courtyard, chestnut laminated beams form a structural system that redefines the space.

Chesnut scatling: energy efficiency and durability

Another key element in the refurbishment of this building has been the use of laminated wooden scantlings in the manufacture of the joinery, which guarantee dimensional stability and high strength. Their application provides exceptional performance in terms of thermal insulation and energy efficiency.

Thanks to the low thermal transmittance of chestnut wood, the carpentry solutions developed with this material are more competitive than other construction systems, both in economic terms and in terms of sustainability.
